Cotton Candy Tree

This is what my boys call the big cherry tree that sits in our front yard. When it is in full bloom the blossoms do look like giant puffs of pink cotton candy.  It really is a sight to see and a true sign of spring (whether Mother Nature agrees or not).  Speaking of trees my yard is in desperate need of a "spruce up."  I need to study how and when the best times are to prune and cut back the various trees and shrubs in our yard. I think it's in the fall. Any idea?
